News and apps for tech-savvy takeout
By Michael Fitzpatrick Posted on February 1, 2016

The next technology battle may be shaping up as a food fight. Technology giants Amazon and Google have stepped into the food delivery ring. Amazon’s Prime Now offers Prime members one- and two-hour deliveries on thousands of items from Amazon and local stores. The service now includes takeout from restaurants in West Coast cities including Seattle, Portland and Los Angeles. The company is expected to continue rolling this out to major cities across the country.

Since Google already knows what restaurants we’re searching for, why not let it help with our order? When you’re Googling a restaurant on your smart phone, the search results will include “place an order.” This allows you to choose a delivery service and fill your order on the restaurant’s web site. Google’s search works with some of the most popular restaurant meal delivery apps.

Cool Apps

Hassle-free takeout? There’s an app for that.

Takeout has long been the answer to restaurant food without the hassle of dining out. And while it’s easy enough to call in an order, what if you’re placed on eternal hold? Or the loud dining din makes your “three cheese pizza” order sound like “anchovy pizza”? Rest assured, these popular delivery apps eliminate even these small glitches for a truly hassle-free experience.

GrubHub has become a dominant player in the takeout space, gobbling up other apps and delivering meals from more than 35,000 restaurants in hundreds of cities. For a slightly different flavor, you might also try Seamless, which is owned by GrubHub. Another option is BeyondMenu,

Yelp is known for its restaurant reviews. Now that it’s bought Eat24, you can order from the ones you fancy.

Uber’s got the drivers, now they want to bring you food too. The ride-sharing service is delivering restaurant meals in select cities with its UberEats service. Just click on the plate icon.

Delivery.com takes it a step further, bringing you not only takeout, but pretty much anything else you might want from your neighborhood (in major cities).
