The Boom in Cyber Risk
By Michael Fitzpatrick Posted on October 7, 2016

Cyber crime could cost businesses more than $2 trillion by 2019, about four times as much as in 2015, according to Juniper Research. As the costs mount, the cyber-insurance market could rise from $2 billion in 2015 to $20 billion or more in global premiums, Allianz has estimated. Along with liability and data protection, business interruption is likely to be an increasing concern.

According to a survey by the Ponemon Institute and IBM, the average cost of a data breach has risen 29%—to $4 million—since 2013. The average cost per lost or stolen record was $158 globally but $246 for educational organizations and $355 for healthcare groups. Government agencies and politicians aren’t immune either. Over the last year, data breaches have also hit the Internal Revenue Service, the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security and the Democratic National Committee.

Cool Apps

Smart Protection

All devices big and small are targets for hackers, including your smartphone. While some malware has targeted Apple devices, Android phones draw most of the malicious software. For instance, about 10 million Android phones—mostly outside the United States—were infected earlier this year with the malicious HummingBad app that jeopardizes personal data. To fight mobile malware, here are some apps for Android users to consider.

360 Security is a combined antivirus, speed booster and optimization app.

Avast scans and secures against malware, spyware and phishing attacks.

Bitdefender protects against internet threats and data snoopers.

Lookout protects against mobile threats and also helps you find your phone should you lose it.

ZoneAlarm provides protection against malicious apps and Wi-Fi attacks.

Kaspersky, McAfee, Norton and Sophos also offer popular mobile security apps.
