Obama Takes on Chemical Plant Safety
90-Day Deadline for New Regulations
President Obama has created a working group to address numerous issues involving chemical plants as a direct response to the West, Texas explosion.
The working group has 45 days from the Aug. 1 announcement to test improving coordination among state, federal, local and tribal organizations that deal with chemical plant safety. The group has 90 days to develop new regulations for chemical plant safety.
The working group includes the Labor Department, Home Land Security and the Environmental Protection Agency.
Obama said he wants a unified federal approach within nine months to address identifying and responding to chemical plant risks.
